Northeastern Division of the American Fisheries Society AFS Meeting
In April, I attended the Northeast Fish and Wildlife Conference (66th Annual). This was my first NED meeting. Caleb Slater did an outstanding job organizing and moderating the day-long Freshwater Fisheries session. Fishy Sessions also included Diadromous, and Marine as well as the Northeast Atlantic Coast Striped Bass Fisheries Symposium. Habitat Management included both fisheries and wildlife presentations.
I must admit that I favor our single session AIC Meetings. When you give a presentation at AIC, you have everyone's undivided attention!
AFS President Don Jackson was in attendance at the NED Business Meeting. Congratulations go out to John Arway, our new NED President.
AIC is still seeking to increase AFS Certified Professionals and Associates!
Have you seen Gail Goldberg's column in the May issue of Fisheries? If not Read It! http://www.fisheries.org/afs/publications_fisheries.html
As stated in the March AIC Newsletter, AIC is still willing to help offset your certification fee by paying half! Contact me directly for more information- you need to do this before June 1st to meet our Sept. deadline!
Since only one AIC member contacted me in regard to getting more information on AFS Certification, it appears that the AFS website (http://www.fisheries.org/afs/certification.html) has all the information you need to apply.
I can attest that both the AFS Website and Gail Goldberg are extremely helpful! I recently sent in my application for CFP and it only took about 2.5 hours to complete the entire package. Since I have a Masters Degree in Fisheries and have >7 years of qualifying experience, I applied via the CFP Established category- this saved me time in entering educational requirements. If anyone would like to see my application, just ask.
Lastly, I urge Supervisors whom have highly qualified fisheries employees to encourage AFS Certification! Maybe you can provide them with a few hours of work time to apply, or put AFS Certification on their developmental training plan.
2014 National AFS Meeting within the AIC Geographic Area?
Excomm recently submitted a letter to AFS suggesting two venues for the 2014 National AFS Meeting. AIC members recommended Portland, ME and Saint John's Newfoundland. Although just out of our geographic area, we also put in a word of support for
Montreal (last National AFS meeting in Montreal was 1934).
If AFS is shows interest in the Portland or Saint John's venues, a more detailed (formal) proposal is due at the Pittsburgh National AFS Meeting on September 12th. Since I will not be attending the National meeting, I may be seeking AIC members to present this information- if required. FYI: we have already obtained enough information from Portland and Saint John's to submit a formal proposal.

I can attest that the UMaine Student Fisheries chapter has been quite active this past year, they are closing up the year with a Pot-Luck Dinner in Orono. Special thanks to Phil Dionne and David Kazyak for all the work you put into the organization this past year!
Award Announcement: Peter A. Larkin Student Travel Award
Applications are now being accepted for the Peter A. Larkin Student Travel Award. The Peter A. Larkin Student Travel Award will assist Canadian students interested in fish and fisheries research in attending the annual American Fisheries Society Meeting. This award, available for many years, has helped numerous students attend the annual meeting to present their research findings to an international audience of fisheries professionals.
Application forms are available on the Canadian Aquatic Resources Section (CARS) website: http://www.fisheries.org/units/cars/Awards.htm. We encourage all Canadian students to apply. Applications are due by June 15, 2010.
