IFS activities are focused in the areas of exchange of information, sponsorship of meetings and symposia, and facilitation of international cooperation among fisheries scientists. Recent accomplishments include:

  • Organizing the 1st U.S./China Symposium, held at the Charlotte annual meeting in 1999
  • Symposia on Atlantic swordfish management and Mexican Fisheries
  • Receptions for foreign guests and members at AFS annual meetings
  • Leadership at the 1st World Fisheries Congress held in Athens, Greece in 1992; the 2nd World Fisheries Congress held in Brisbane, Australia in 1996; the 3rd held in Beijing, China in 2000; the 4th held in Vancouver, Canada in 2004; and the 5th held in Yokoyama, Japan in 2008.
  • Administration of the Carl R. Sullivan Memorial Membership Award, providing annually a one-year AFS membership to a non-North American fisheries scientist
  • Development of the Publications for Needy Institutions project, getting donated personal libraries and AFS life subscriptions placed at fisheries libraries in developing countries
  • Development of the Bridge to Mexico project, providing increased interaction with Mexican and other Latin American fisheries scientists
  • Development and support of Tsunami relief in the affected regions of SE Asia
  • Development and management of a reduced rate International Membership Fund
  • Development and management of the International Endowment Fund
