IFS activities are focused in the areas of exchange of information, sponsorship of meetings and
symposia, and facilitation of international cooperation among fisheries scientists. Recent accomplishments include:
Organizing the 1st U.S./China Symposium, held at the Charlotte
annual meeting in 1999
Symposia on Atlantic swordfish management and Mexican Fisheries
Receptions for foreign guests and members at AFS annual meetings
Leadership at the 1st World Fisheries Congress held in Athens, Greece
in 1992; the 2nd World Fisheries Congress held in Brisbane, Australia in 1996; the
3rd held in Beijing, China in 2000; the 4th held in Vancouver, Canada in 2004; and the 5th held in Yokoyama, Japan in 2008.
Administration of the Carl R. Sullivan Memorial Membership Award, providing annually a one-year
AFS membership to a non-North American fisheries scientist
Development of the Publications for Needy Institutions project, getting donated personal libraries
and AFS life subscriptions placed at fisheries libraries in developing countries
Development of the Bridge to Mexico project, providing increased interaction with Mexican
and other Latin American fisheries scientists
Development and support of Tsunami relief in the affected regions of SE Asia
Development and management of a reduced rate International Membership Fund
Development and management of the International Endowment Fund
