The
fall meeting of the Indiana Chapter of the American Fisheries Society
will be held on Thursday October 6, 2011 in the Union Lahman Room at
Manchester College in North Manchester, IN. The business meeting will
begin at 11am. At the conclusion of the business meeting, lunch will be
served by Manchester College Conference Services, and will consist of a
buffet‐style sandwich spread, chips, cookies, and beverages. Cost for
lunch is $7.50 per person, with $2.50 subsidized by the Chapter for an
out‐of‐pocket cost of $5.00 per member, payable at the door by cash or
check.
Following lunch, the continuing education portion of the meeting will
feature Jerry Sweeten, Ph.D. Jerry is an Associate Professor of Biology
and Director of Environmental Studies at Manchester College. He is also
the advisor to the newest student subchapter of IAFS. Jerry will
discuss a brief history of the program leading into the present day,
including a couple of habitat improvement projects involving dam
removals on the Eel River.
The meeting will then hit the road for site visits to the dam removal
projects discussed by Dr. Sweeten, as well as an environmental
monitoring station maintained on the Eel River by Manchester College.
Transportation to the River is being arranged through Manchester
College in the form of 15‐ passenger vans. Once the site visits are
complete, the final portion of the meeting, a hook‐and‐line sampling
mixer will begin (river level dependent). Those who wish to participate
should bring the appropriate gear (rods, tackle, waders, fishing
license!, etc.). According to Jerry, the areas we will be visiting are
good areas to find mussels as well, so the opportunity for mussel
viewing and identification will also be an option. These activities
will give student members the opportunity to mix and socialize with
professional members, developing important connections while enjoying
an afternoon of on the river. The meeting will officially end at 5pm,
though participants are free to leave at their leisure, provided they
have their own transportation home.
