What is a listserv?    What is a listserv used for?    Who controls the listserv?
Who uses the listserv?    Instructions    HELP

What is the PA-AFS listerv?  (Top)

A listserv allows one person to send a message to a group without having to deal with the addresses of each person in the group. The message is not stored anywhere which makes a listserv different from a message board or forum.  Message boards or forums keep messages posted in chronological order on web sites and individuals can look up past messages.  The focus of the PA-AFS listserv will be that of the PA AFS Chapter, its business and local or regional messages of worth from Chapter members to other members (see What is a listserv used for?).

Messages are distributed to list members in one of two ways: immediate or digest. If a member chooses the immediate option, then the listserv sends the member a message when it receives it.  If a list member chooses digest option, the server stores all messages received each day and puts them into one email which is sent at the end of the day. The digest option reduces email clutter.

The listserv is a service provided by the Parent society. There is no cost for the service. The PA-AFS listserv will function in the manner as the Parent society listserv.  Rules for using the listserv are found below, Instructions for the listserv

What is a listserv used for?  (Top)

The listserv is used by membership to distribute messages to one another. Typical messages posted on the AFS list include: announcements/reminders of upcoming events or meetings, requests for information, job postings (in particular student positions or advertisements for graduate students), news releases, legislative briefs, and it can serve as a forum for discussion of topics.

The listerv functions to increase member to member interaction, allows for efficient Excomm to membership communication, and provides a benefit to being a Chapter member. Listserv functions will not replace the Newsletter or the existing email communication procedures (like this message); they provide a daily communication service. In many chapters, it is the standard for Chapter communication (but not for Excomm communication).

Who controls the listserv? (moderated vs. unmoderated)  (Top)

For now the listserv will be self regulating. A regulated listserv is "moderated" meaning that all messages go to one person, a moderator, and if the moderator approves the message it goes on the listserv. The PA-AFS listserv will begin as unmoderated. If there are any problems with rules being broken, the list can be changed to moderated.

The list is under control of web services of the Parent society and the PA Chapter Listserv Coordinator.  A member of the services unit is a registered member of the list and monitors activity. The PA Chapter has a listserv coordinator that also monitors activity and will coordinate problem solving with the Parent Society web services section.

Who can use the listserv?  (Top)

This list is for Chapter members only.

Instructions for the listserv?  (Top)

This listserv is for communication among Chapter members and its use is limited to members of Pennsylvania Chapter AFS.  While the list is for Chapter members, content is not limited to Chapter business. If you have information which would be of interest to fishery professionals or students please distribute it.

You can subscribe/unsubscribe as well as request a digest version (one daily message with all messages sent) if you prefer. To change your subscription, send an email to the following address:
      mdaemon@fisheries.org

  • to un-subscribe, enter UNSUBSCRIBE PA-AFS in the body of the e-mail
  • to subscribe, enter SUBSCRIBE PA-AFS in the body of the e-mail
  • to receive a digested version, enter  DIGEST PA-AFS in the body of the e-mail.  You get a digest or compilation of messages sent to the list each day in a single message.

To post a message to the listserv simply send e-mail to:
      PA-AFS@fisheries.org

Your message will automatically be sent to everyone on the listserv.

List members must follow these guidelines when posting messages to this list:

  1. Postings should be directed to more than one person; messages which are clearly of value to only one (or just a few) members should be sent privately.
  2. No individual should post more than twice per topic in a 24-hour period.
  3. Postings should contain the real name of the sender, either in the header or the body of the message.
  4. Personal attacks, insults, and rude posts are prohibited.
  5. Do not attach files to messages sent to the list.  If it requires an attachment then please have interested users request it specifically. If possible post it on a web site and point them to that site.
  6. The listserv owners reserve the right to remove individuals from participation whom at their discretion have failed to observe these rules or act in an unprofessional manner.  By signing up for the listserv, receipt of these rules and consent to follow these rules has been acknowledged for the e-mail address and user.

Please remember that every message posted to this listserv is sent to everyone on the list.  If your message is more appropriate for an individual please don't clutter the list, send it directly to them.
