Continuing Education Workshop: Fisheries Economics for Non-Economists

This workshop is designed to provide an introductory knowledge of applied resource economics to students majoring in fisheries biology, professional biologists managers, and administrators involved in fisheries management tasks. Lectures and demonstrations will be used to cover basic microeconomic concepts, as applied to commercial and recreational fisheries, and the allocation of fishery resources between these user groups. The course will enable participants to understand and use applied economic analyses of fisheries benefit-cost analysis and impact analysis. The course will allow participant to gain an understanding of:

  • The basic concepts of applied microeconomics and welfare economics, and specific applications of these concepts to fisheries management issues.
  • The identification of critical factors in benefit-cost and impact analysis of fishery management issues.
  • The identification of common errors committed when analyzing fisheries economic data.
  • The role of economic analysis in the application of Federal laws and related litigation.
