AFS

The Section undertakes the following activities and programs:

Annual Meetings: The Section meets annually, concurrently with the AFS Annual Meeting, to discuss current issues and fishery social science research. The Section regularly organizes and sponsors symposia and workshops. The annual meeting provides members with the opportunity to meet and share experiences.

Special Sessions: Panel discussions, research symposia and workshops are organized by Section members at AFS local, regional and national conferences and meetings. These Special Sessions provide social and economic information needed to keep local fishery administrators abreast of issues and research.

Special Publications: AFS publishes journals which welcome social and economic papers. The Section also prepares and publishes, through AFS, special publications designed to help the fisheries community receive, understand and employ social and economic information. The most recent include Investigation and Valuation of Fish-Kills and A Handbook of Sources and Applications of Fisheries Social Science Information.

Special Projects: Within the AFS, the Section undertakes special projects for the benefit of the Society as a whole. Past projects have ranged from relatively simple tasks such as designing survey forms to more complex endeavors such as the development of social science curricula for fishery scientist certification and designing new governance structures for the Society. Section members and officers also regularly advise the AFS Board on fishery policy issues and work on special task groups.
